IRP registration and renewal

IRP registration records your permission to stay in Ireland. Prepare for first registration or renewal with the documents, portal access and timing your permission requires.

Updated

IRP registration records your permission to stay in Ireland and results in a residence card. Employers, colleges, landlords, banks and airlines may ask to see it as proof of current permission.

We tailor registration and renewal support to your permission and circumstances. This may involve preparing category-specific documents, resolving portal access or coordinating renewal with a passport, employment permit or planned trip.

First registration

ISD says that once it grants permission to stay in Ireland, the person must register the permission within 90 days. The first registration process records the permission and leads to an Irish Residence Permit card.

The exact steps depend on where the person lives and the type of permission. A first registration file should usually bring together the passport, permission letter or visa decision, address evidence, supporting documents for the stamp category and any appointment confirmation.

ISD also says that where a person cannot get an appointment within the 90-day period, it will not cancel the permission or expect the person to leave the country while they are waiting to register. Keep evidence of attempts to book and attend the appointment.

Online renewal

Before starting an online renewal, check the current permission, passport, address and employment or study documents, together with any evidence required for the specific category.

The ISD renewal page directs applicants in the Republic of Ireland to renew their permission and explains that documents must be provided for the relevant permission type. For employment, study, family and Stamp 4 upgrade files, the renewal evidence will be different.

Check portal access early. ISD requires all Customer Service Portal users to use an authenticator app at each login. A lost phone or an app that has not been set up can delay access.

What happens when renewal is late

The safest position is to apply before the IRP card expires, with the required documents uploaded. During the summer 2026 delays, ISD’s employer notice applied only where a renewal application had been made before expiry and the other listed conditions were met.

The notice does not provide the same protection for applications made after expiry. If the card has already expired, keep the application confirmation, uploaded documents and explanation for the delay together.

For work permissions, the employer may ask for evidence that the person can continue working. The answer depends on the stamp, employment permit position and whether the renewal was submitted before expiry.

Summer 2026 delays

ISD acknowledged in July 2026 that the Burgh Quay registration office was experiencing a very large volume of applications, with IRP renewal processing in excess of 17 weeks for some categories. It also said it could take a further two weeks to receive the card after renewal.

The same period produced temporary measures for employers and travel. The employer notice covered specified workers awaiting renewal, while a separate travel notice asked carriers to allow travel on a recently expired IRP card where renewal had been submitted before expiry.

These temporary measures covered defined groups who had applied on time. They did not remove the requirement to apply for renewal before expiry.

Whether it counts towards citizenship

Whether registered residence counts towards citizenship depends on the stamp recorded on the IRP card and the naturalisation rules.

For example, ISD says Stamp 1, Stamp 1G, Stamp 3 and Stamp 4 are reckonable, while Stamp 2 is not. Keep each IRP card and each renewal approval, because later residence calculations depend on what stamp was held on which dates.

Where things go wrong

The common problems are waiting until the card is close to expiry, losing access to the portal, uploading documents that do not match the stamp category, or assuming a pending renewal protects every situation. Travel is especially sensitive, because carriers may ask for a current card or a specific ISD notice.

We agree the work required for your renewal after reviewing the category, expiry date and available documents. Support may include document preparation, portal access or organising evidence while the card is pending.

Common questions

How soon must I register after permission is granted?

ISD says that once permission to stay is granted, the person must register it within 90 days. If an appointment is not available within that period, ISD says it will not cancel the permission or expect the person to leave while waiting to register.

What changed on the ISD portal?

ISD says multi-factor authentication is now required for all users of the Customer Service Portal. Each login requires an authenticator app such as Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator.
