Travelling with an Irish Residence Permit

What changed
Visa-required residents previously needed a separate re-entry visa for some trips abroad. Adult residents with a current IRP card now generally rely on that card for their return to Ireland.
Immigration Service Delivery’s current Travel and Re-Entry Visas notice confirms the present position for IRP holders. A visa-required national with a valid, in-date IRP card does not need a re-entry visa to return after travel, and a non-visa required national does not need an IRP card or any visa for that return journey.
Who can travel with an IRP
An in-date Irish Residence Permit card is the key document for a visa-required resident returning to Ireland. The IRP is issued after successful registration and shows the type of immigration permission through a stamp number.
The card should be valid when the person returns. A trip booked close to the expiry date creates avoidable risk, particularly if the renewal has not yet been completed or the replacement card has not arrived. Airlines, border staff abroad and immigration officers in Ireland may all look for a current document.
The passport matters as well. Names, dates of birth and document numbers should be consistent across the passport, IRP, flight booking and any permission correspondence. Where a passport has been renewed, the traveller should carry evidence that links the old and new documents where relevant.
Children and exceptional cases
The current Travel and Re-Entry Visas page also deals with children under 16 years of age. It states that the current suspension of re-entry visas for under 16s removes the requirement for children under 16 to hold a re-entry visa to return to Ireland if accompanied by their parent or legal guardian who holds a valid in-date permission to reside in Ireland.
For family travel, check the child’s documents, relationship evidence and the accompanying adult’s permission. Confirm the requirements before departure if a child travels with one parent, another relative or separately.
Emergency re-entry visas can only be obtained before planned travel and cannot be requested from outside Ireland. Visa-required residents already abroad who need an emergency visa to return should contact the nearest Visa Office or Irish Embassy.
Where travel plans go wrong
Do not assume that an expired IRP, renewal receipt or appointment confirmation will be accepted in place of a current card. Where possible, complete renewal before travelling if the card is close to expiry.
Travel before first registration needs particular care. A person admitted on a long stay visa may be lawfully in the State without yet holding the IRP card needed for return travel. Allow for registration when planning trips abroad.
During a change from student to employment permission, or from employment to family permission, check that the travel documents show the current position. Correspondence confirming a change may not resolve questions about an outdated card.
